“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” – B. Franklin

The sign that said that caught students’ attention too. On April 24, we spent about 10 hours at Georgetown University for Georgetown Day, the campus’ annual excuse for an all-day block party on the quad complete with bands, free food and about 10,000 people. Georgetown Day sees a lot of alcohol consumed by students (as we got to campus at 10:30 a.m., the liquor store’s line was out the door).  Beer is on many minds already; God, maybe not.

Needless to say, our table about beer, God and happiness provoked some interesting conversations. With a survey about the Ben Franklin quote, we requested thoughts on God, the nature of love and happiness, and even the meaning of Jesus’ death. Below is a quote from a corresponding website, BeerIsProof.org:

“To Ben the issue was simple. Simple enough that a cold beer from the local pub was proof that God loved him. What about you? Consider laughter, music, sunsets at the beach and the miraculous combination of chocolate and peanut butter. Do these things suggest that the genius behind it all wants us to be happy?”

Without endorsing drinking, we managed to have over 100 conversations and at least one person who said that he wanted to invite Christ into his life.  Apparently anything can start a conversation about Jesus.

Go big or go home – and bring someone with you.

The semester is over. Students have moved home, gone to their summer projects or graduated and started “real life.” Last week at an end-of-the year retreat to help us look back before we look forward, we named as our greatest “wins” things that happened in our homes and extended “off hours” hangout times – out on the quad until midnight, at our place drinking tea over movies and life discussions, at campfires at the staff guys’ house, or at gatherings sharing home-cooked meals on couches rather than in fluorescent-lit meeting rooms facing front.

Year Two has seen God answer our prayer for genuine community marked by transformation.  Internationals, skeptics of all varieties and even a few Jewish students have hung around to consider the claims of Jesus. Things have come into the open that normally don’t.  We haven’t seen the masses come to meetings, but lives are changing. Praise God!

Lean, mean and on the scene!

This year we had a ready-made community of 9 staff and interns and three apartments to invite students into.  With the close of the year comes (hopefully temporary) end of this fun chapter. This fall, it will be just 3 of us. Some of the interns will be fundraising and going elsewhere, one is moving on to pursue a masters and the other couple will be moving to an established ministry where their gifts will be a better fit.  Every change comes with pros and cons, but we’re excited to see what the year will bring! Pray that God would fight our battles for us, and provide a way to move closer into the city.

Pray for:

  • As we hope to move from Arlington into DC at some point, pray that we’d find affordable housing that can fit lots of students.
  • This summer we’ll be taking classes again – this time to help us learn how to lead a team and structure a movement. We’re pining for summer project but recognize our need for training.
  • We’ll be working on developing a larger support base in DC this summer before and after our assignment, pray for contacts and perseverance in that work.

An exciting week for us…

With the Steelers in the Superbowl and a new President entering the white house, not to mention the city-wide event that we’re putting on this Friday… this week is a little crazy.

December 2008 Update

Peniel: A place to wrestle.

Yesterday on the way to the Goodwill Store, my Pakistani friend Zharguna mentioned that her son joined the high school wrestling team.  Coming from a country where physical danger is a daily reality, she orients her life around the safety of her four children, even here. “They hit each other. Is it dangerous?” she wanted to know. I assured her that, contrary to how it may appear, wrestling does not involve trying to hurt the opponent, much less punch him. Of course, there will always be risk of injury, but the risk of a lifetime of inactivity often outweighs the risk involved in any high school sport.

Maybe that is what Jacob realized in Genesis 32, as he wrestled with a physical manifestation of God – that to disengage is more dangerous in the long term than any injury he could possibly sustain. Even limping as he was, as he walked away from that encounter, you can’t help but think that trading in his old name for one given by God himself was more than a trip to the thrift store.

Last month, that’s what we had in mind for with our first city-wide large group meeting when we named it “Peniel” – students weighing the risk and choosing to keep wrestling with God, rather than the countless ways they could disengage. And, by God’s grace it came together! Jayson got to exercise his teaching and public speaking with a very relatable message on Genesis 32 and some challenging discussion questions, as about 30 students from several schools considered what names them, and what it would be like if their identity was rooted in the reputation of Christ instead, the One who is what we aren’t and did what we couldn’t.

December 1 – World AIDS Day

Speaking of wrestling, some of my own this month was over an invitation to participate in the last hurrah of a non-religious student group at Prince George’s Community College – a World AIDS Day panel discussion on sex and relationships. What a great opportunity! But what do I speak into a group of students from DC and Maryland whose states rank 1st and 2nd for AIDS rates in the US (barring the territories)? How do I articulate grace AND honesty on this loaded topic in such a fragmented format?

As questions regarding “The Power of Sex” and “Cycles in Relationships” were posed to the panel of six (the psychologist, the professor, the AIDS expert, two students, and myself), it was interesting to note the two main tactics of the enemy in this area, denial and despair, and how they surfaced even in the nature of the questions asked.

Please continue to pray with me that both the words of warning and hope from that day would resonate loudly in the minds of these young people, many of whom have been dealt a hand of complex generational sin and brokenness. Pray for those who have or know someone with the virus, and that those playing with fire would not deny the power of sexual decisions and not despair when things catch up to them. Pray that they would trust a God who wants their best and offers resurrecting power.

Events and Effects

As you can see, the past month or two have been centered mainly around a few bigger events, a reality that can be hard on a ministry that has not quite seen the tip into student leadership. Add in a staff team for whom event planning is not a strength, and you can bet we are worn out! Over the next term, there are a number of upcoming events (hopefully three more “Peniel” nights, spring breaks, a fundraising dinner…) Please pray that the effect of our hard work this term and these events would be students who are excited and equipped to run point with some things, and that the movements would start to be more self-sustaining!

Grace & Peace,
Jayson & Carrie

Please Pray For

  • New teammates! – Rebecca & Tom Flack have finished fundraising and reported to our team! Pray for smooth transition, and a clear vision for how they will fit here.
  • Rest! – There can be a huge difference between resting and just vacating. Pray for students as they travel home for the break that they would take time to hear from the Lord. Pray for our staff to know how to use their time well, when to work and when to rest.

For those who have pursued God for any length of time, we know that it sometimes involves struggle. For believers and skeptics alike, circumstances often confound while the heavens remain silent. Over the course of the past few weeks, we have hit the campuses across the city with poster board and sharpie in hand, posing the question (“what one question would you ask God”) and encouraging students to keep wrestling, even if it means we come back with a limp.

Friday night, we’ll be hosting a city-wide gathering (hopefully a first of many) named “Peniel” after the site where Jacob wrestled with God. Lord willing, our growing network of Cru small groups and the friends and strangers that have been invited will head to the University of D.C. for a group experiment in personal discovery – worship, teaching, discussion, food, community — followed by a service project Saturday morning.

Please join us in praying that:

- Jayson would have clarity in the message he’s giving on Genesis 32

- that involved students would go out on a limb and bring friends, and that the whole night would be accessible to everyone and free of “christianese”

- everyone who comes would see a healthy picture of the body of christ and understand the “whys” of corporate worship/organized religion, and embrace the idea of pursuing God wholeheartedly
- the event would cause our tiny small groups to see past their individual campuses to gain a heart for the city
- the service day on Saturday would be well-attended and a blessing to the community

-the name and reputation of Jesus would be honored by the night
